Schüler:innen der 5Bg und 5C berichten von der Sprachreise nach York (06.-13.06.2026):
York – Experience for a Lifetime (by Marlene Pich-Steinmair, Jacqueline Babikian, Lea-Elena Oldenburg (5B) and Luka Markovic (5C))
Have you ever been to the amazing city of York? Our two classes, 5Bg and 5C, have recently explored this extraordinary medieval city, where we stayed with host families. Every day we had to face new adventures: taking the bus to the university, talking to people, and adjusting to the English culture. Even though we encountered some difficulties, we spent a lovely week there.
Every morning, we had a language course with two language tutors, where we improved our oral communication by discussing different topics. We ended the week with a presentation based on the TV show “Dragons’ Den.” After spending the lunch break on campus or in the city, we explored the city even more. Moreover, we visited two interesting museums: the National Railway Museum and the York Castle Museum. By walking along the city wall, we got to discover the city from another perspective. We uncovered York’s spooky history during our tour of the York Dungeon, and we learned even more during the Ghost Walk. At the end of the week, we admired the amazing building of York Minster and broadened our horizons by learning more about Roman history. Furthermore, we immersed ourselves in the English culture and interacted with local people during a selfie challenge.
Our highlights were the two coastal cities, Whitby and Scarborough, which we visited on Sunday. There we had some free time, appreciated the picturesque beach, and admired the stunning medieval buildings.
We want to thank the two teachers, Frau Professor Steinbuch and Frau Professor Ponleitner, who accompanied us and made it possible for us to have such an amazing week.
Our Language Trip to York (by Julius Freudensprung, Elias Sabogal Hernandez and Román Frank Noguera (5B))
From 6th June to 13th June, the classes 5Bg and 5C went on a language trip to York, which is a wonderful city near Manchester. After our arrival at Manchester Airport, we still had a bit of time before our host families picked us up in York. Therefore, we drove to Manchester on our coach and explored this beautiful city on our own, including the Science and Industry Museum and some shopping. We then continued our trip to Old Trafford, the home stadium of Manchester United. Afterwards, we drove to York and were picked up by our host families.
The next day, a full day excursion was on the programme. This included visiting the railway station where scenes from Harry Potter were filmed and exploring the wonderful towns of Whitby and Scarborough. Whitby is a small and old fishing town with picturesque streets, a beautiful atmosphere, and a feeling of sea and holiday. Scarborough also lies on the eastern coast of Great Britain and also offers an exhilarating feeling and glamorous surroundings.
In the following days, we always had lessons at York St John’s University in the morning, followed by one or two shorter activities in the afternoon. On Monday, we had a guided walk through the historically fascinating inner city of York. York offers some of the most fascinating and historic buildings, as well as picturesque streets, that we have seen in our lives. On Tuesday and Wednesday, we visited two museums: the Castle Museum, which showed us the rich history of York, and the Railway Museum, where we could see old and traditional, as well as modern, trains. On Wednesday evening, we also took part in a ghost walk where we heard many exciting and scary ghost stories. On Thursday, we did a selfie challenge which gave us the opportunity to communicate with locals by asking them for a selfie. Finally, on Friday, we visited the York Dungeon, which was creepy and exhilarating. On Saturday, we made our way back home and were very sad to say goodbye to our host families and this wonderful city.
All in all, it was an awesome trip that really helped us to get to know English culture and history better, improve our English, and of course have fun!
Yorkshire Adventures (by Leon Janis, Alexander Samardzic, Milan Vukovic and Benedikt Bauer (5B))
5Bg and 5C were on a language trip to York and had a great week with their teachers Katharina Steinbuch and Bettina Ponleitner. On the first day, they landed in Manchester and had some free time in the heart of the city where they also saw the famous Old Trafford Stadium. At the end of the day, they drove to York and met their host families.
On Day 2, they visited the famous Harry Potter train station which appeared in the first Harry Potter movie, after which they had a long drive to Whitby, where most of them had great fish & chips. After visiting this old town, they drove to the coast and visited Scarborough, where a group of boys won amazing prizes at the fair.
On the third day, they had tests at the language school which they attended all week, and afterwards they enjoyed a wonderful walk inside the city walls of York.
The day after, they also had classes, but the afternoon was far more enjoyable because they visited a wonderful museum called the Castle Museum.
The first part of the next day repeated itself with classes, but the afternoon was much more exciting as the group visited the National Railway Museum, and right after that they went to a pub called The Fat Badger. They had a great lunch, and about an hour later they had another amazing activity: a ghost walk. They heard spooky stories about the plague and other scary things that happened in the medieval ages of York.
On the next day, they had more lessons with their language teachers, Marcia and Lynn. After lessons, they had a selfie challenge where they had to take pictures with interesting sights and interesting people, and when the selfie challenge was done, they visited the historic Minster.
The school week ended with another day of morning classes and an afternoon adventure in the York Dungeon, where they witnessed funny acts with a historic background.
All in all, it was a great week, and most of the kids enjoyed it very much.
